1924 ~ HERBERT DUNN ~ 2019

It is with profound sadness that we say goodbye to a man of great courage, grace, and insight. A gentle soul, Herb Dunn served in WWII as a teenager, shouldering the responsibility of achieving freedom for the oppressed. Severely wounded, he returned home, eventually able to attend university where he met the love of his life, Stella Hewlko. They married and were blessed with a precious gift, their son, Theodore William. Having experienced the worst of humanity during the war, Herb devoted his life to the service of others, in particular, teaching. He was a natural educator, guiding his students to their best selves. He loved helping a fresh, young mind by presenting the possibilities for learning and enrichment. Generations of students became lifelong friends. Herb was a man of deep honour with a genuine interest in people. He searched for the true essence of each person he encountered and brought out the best in all of us. Blessed with insatiable curiosity, Herb sought new experiences ad knowledge, making him a lifelong student as well as a teacher.
Herb has now transitioned to the next stage of his journey, joining Stella, who predeceased him in 2000. Surviving Herb are his son, Ted; his niece, Lynn Jacklyn; and numerous extended family. Also, missing him are dear friends, Daylene Neveu and her sons, Henry and Marc; his best friend, Bart Campbell and his wife, Lisa, and their daughters, Sydney and Emma.
A Celebration of Herb’s life will be held at Crestwood Mennonite Brethren Church, 2348 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB, on Wednesday, May 1st, 2019 at 2:30 pm. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Golden K Kiwanis or Alzheimer Society, 201, 770 – 6th Street SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4J6.
