1953 ~ HARVEY BERGER ~ 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Harvey James Berger on Sunday, June 3rd, 2018 at the age of 64. Harvey was born in Medicine Hat on October 2nd, 1953, the eldest of five children, to Harold and Agatha Berger. He was raised and educated in Medicine Hat where he attended Elm Street, Alexandra and Medicine Hat High School. After he earned his Political Science degree at the University of Alberta in 1975 he left the country to travel. He returned to Medicine Hat where he met and started to date Kathy Treen in 1977. With encouragement from Kathy they moved to Calgary to pursue Harvey’s dream of becoming a lawyer. He graduated with a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Calgary in 1983 and formed many lasting friendships. Harvey moved back to Medicine Hat to article at Biddell Fisher Link and was called to the bar in 1984. Not someone to rush into anything, Harvey married Kathy on June 21st, 1986 after being together 9 years. Their first child, Kristine, was born in 1987 followed by Brett in 1990, completing their loving family. Harvey was always very proud of his children, instilling in them the hard work ethic that he learned from his parents, and would brag about them at every opportunity. He became a name partner at Sihvon Carter Fisher Berger in 1990 and helped build their new office in 1993, which later became Courtyard Law Centre. Harvey was overjoyed with the birth of his grandson, Jayden in February and took every opportunity to spend time with him. Harvey was an avid Tigers hockey fan, having season tickets for over 20 years. Fitness and healthy lifestyle were important to Harvey; he enjoyed cycling, hiking, skiing and being outdoors. Harvey was an active member of the community as a board member for the Friends of the Library Film Board and Parks Advisory Committee as well as volunteering for various events. He felt fortunate to have travelled many different places in the world with his loving wife and close friends. Harvey had a thirst for knowledge, was an avid reader and always on the forefront of new technology.
Harvey, beloved husband of Mrs. Kathryn “Kathy” Berger, also leaves to cherish his memory two children: Kristine (Eric) Gottselig and their son, Jayden; and Brett Berger; his mother, Agatha Berger; two brothers, Ron (Lane) Berger, and Brent (Angela) Berger; two sisters, Elaine (John) Orr, and Cindy (Tom) Heringer; as well as numerous relatives and friends. Harvey was predeceased by his father, Harold Berger.
The celebration of life will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Friday, June 8th, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Gary W. Goran officiating. Belinda Hazel Horgus passed away in Medicine Hat on Sunday, May 27, 2018, at the age of 54 years. JACK ANTHONY HUDEC

May 25, 1949 – Medicine Hat, Alberta
May 31, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Hudec of Calgary, AB, on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at the age of 69 years. Jack passed away after a courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma over the past two years.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Nicole Hudec (Bradshaw), his son, Chris Hudec, his wife Sheena Mills and their daughter, Sophie Hudec, father-in-law, Dean Caskey and his wife Evelyn Caskey. He was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Signe Hudec (Strande), mother-in-law Ruth Caskey, and his sister Joyce Rauch. Jack was born and raised in Medicine Hat, AB, where he met and later married his high school sweetheart Nicole. During his school years he developed a passion for music and carried into adulthood, as he played drums in two bands. Shortly after getting married, Jack and Nicole moved to St. Albert, AB where they lived for 15 years. During this time, Jack forged many close relationships with bandmates and co-workers at Key Oilfield Services. Jack, a loyal and loving friend, often travelled across Alberta to spend time with friends and family in Medicine Hat. In 1985, the Hudec family moved to Calgary, as Jack took on a leadership role, later becoming the VP of Sales at Weatherford Canada. During these years, Jack enjoyed his leisure time playing golf, skiing in the mountains and attending Chris’ hockey games. After retiring from Weatherford Canada in 2005, Jack and Nicole traveled extensively taking road trips to many places in the US and Canada. Jack’s pleasure during his retirement years was bonding with friends in Kelowna and Phoenix. Always the entertainer, he loved to listen to music and spending time on his boat in the Okanagan. Recently, Jack’s newfound joy came from his granddaughter Sophie. He was invested in her milestones, and spent as much time as he could singing and reading to her, and most importantly, making her laugh and smile. The family wishes to thank Dr. Bahlis and the nursing staff at Tom Baker Cancer Center for their care and respectful treatment of Jack during the past two years. LEONARD LEE SHARLAND

1955 ~ 2018
Sharland, Leonard Lee, a dedicated Duplicate Bridge player for many years played his last hand Thursday, May 31st, passing away to be with his Lord and Saviour on Friday, June 1st. Len is survived by his loving parents, Len and Laurie Sharland, his sister, Raeann and her children, Jessilyn (Dan) Forigo and Jennafer Yuhas and special family friend, Theresa Wiebe, as well as aunts, uncles and cousins in Canada and the USA. Also left to mourn his passing are his Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday Duplicate Bridge family. At Leonard Lee’s request there will be no formal funeral service. NICHOLAS SLOOTWEG

1963 ~ 2018
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Nicholas Slootweg announce his passing at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at the age of 54 years. Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Nick and Winnie Slootweg; his wife, Debbie Siwy; his sister, Adrienne, his brother, Tony; stepchildren, Tiffany (Perry) Rasmussen, Karlena (Justin) Martinuk and Tyler Siwy; his grand babies, Ayla Martinuk and Brielle Rasmussen. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins as well as his mother and father-in-law, Bonnie and Hugh McDonald, Trio, his Safeway family and numerous friends. Nick was born July 2, 1963, at the Medicine Hat Hospital. He attended school at Earl Kitchener, Connaught, Alexandra Junior High and Medicine Hat High. He worked at Aberdeen Pharmacy during high school and settled into his lifetime career with Safeway as a general clerk and lead man for 39 years. He loved his job and put his heart and soul into it, always hard working and dependable. He loved playing hockey in his youth and riding his motorbike. Nick always made people smile with his fun sense of humour. He loved his family and was always there for them. He met the love of his life at Safeway in 2005 and died in her arms. He loved being outside and took great pride in his yard. He was the best lawn man in Medicine Hat and taught his son-in-law, Justin how to do it!
