1928 ~ MARTIN ~ 2016 Rose Martin of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Sam Martin, passed away on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2016 at the age of 88 years. 1939 ~ COTTEN ~ 2016 Russell Levern Cotten of Empress, beloved husband of the late Olga Cotten, passed away on Tuesday, April 5th, 2016 at the age of 76 years. Russell leaves to cherish his memory his son, Jason Cotten (Shari Hansen); his daughter, Karen Cotten (Dan Graham); five grandchildren, Brandy (BJ) Miller, Candice (Cody) Campbell, Cristin (Kyle) Koch, Caitlin Cotten and Cole Cotten; four brothers, Victor (Val) Cotten, Mack (Arley) Cotten, Bradley (Arlene) Engel and Colin (Val) Engel; two sisters, Colleen (Halmet) Kolross and Orleen Engel; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Russell was predeceased by his wife, Olga; two sons, Levern Cotten and Hugh Cotten; his parents, Vaughn and Clara Cotten; two brothers, Stewart Cotten and Dennis Cotten; and one sister, Charlotte Baumann. Russell was born on August 2nd, 1939 in Medicine Hat where he was raised and educated. He worked for the City of Medicine Hat until his retirement. Russell enjoyed dancing, hockey, his bikes, coffee time, Sunday breakfast and spending time in his garage. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. 1950 ~ TOMASZEWSKI ~ 2016 It is with deepest sadness that our family announces the passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Richard (Rick) Stephen Tomaszewski, on Thursday, April 7th, 2016 in Medicine Hat, Alberta at the age of 66 years. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Vicky Tomaszewski; and daughters, Annalisa Tomaszewski, Theresa (Kelly) Lerner and Stephanie (Jeremiah) Lehr. Also left to cherish his memory are his four grandsons, Ashton and Tyson Lerner, Ethan and Brody Lehr and another grandchild due in July. Richard also leaves his sister, Zenona Malinski; and brother, Marian Tukiendorf of Chicago, Illinois; his brother and sisters-in-law, Ed & Sharon Mastel, Ben & Theresa Mastel, Leo & Jackie Mastel, Rose Ann & Darren Rud and Allan & Brenda Mastel; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States. Richard was predeceased by his parents, Roman & Anna Tomaszewski; brother, Zbigniew Tomaszewski; mother and father-in-law, Lagatha & Egnotz Mastel; aunt and uncle, Katrina & Walter Denes; cousin, Richard Denes; and step-father, Boleslaw Tukiendorf. Richard was born on March 15th, 1950 in Munster, Germany. At the age of 2, Richard and his family moved to the United States and resided in Chicago, Illinois where he attended school. In 1966, Richard moved to Los Angeles for two years and worked in various jobs. In July 1968, he moved to Canada eventually settling in Medicine Hat. He met his lifelong partner, Vicky in January of 1972 and they were married on December 1st, 1972. Richard worked at Cancarb for a number of years, then in 1984 and up to his retirement in 2011, he worked as a Stock Taker for the British Military at CFB Suffield. Richard was a member of the Medicine Hat Elks Club, Medicine Hat Fish and Game and the Redcliff Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping with the Cresswells in various places in Canada and the United States as well as tinkering around and building things in his garage. Richard spent countless hours at the Mastel Farm taking part in various aspects of farm life. Richard and Vicky enjoyed their trips to Mexico, Cuba, Disney World, Alaska and in April 2015 Richard was able to fulfill a lifelong dream with his family by taking a cross country train trip to visit the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC where his brother, Zbigniew is honoured. We would like to thank Dr. Foley and his team at the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, Dr. Filanti, the Palliative Care team at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, Mark Sloan, and Christina and her team from Home Care for all their care and compassion throughout Richard’s journey. FODE Denelda Rena Fode passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at the age of 83 years, beloved wife of Leonard Lessly Fode of Medicine Hat. She also leaves to cherish her memory her children, Karen (Milton) Cash, Hal (Irene) Fode, Gerry (Debbie) Fode and Ron (Susan) Fode; six grandchildren, Kendra (Connor); Stephen; Kayla (Travis) and their son Reid; Ryan; Megan (Ryan) and their children Deagan and Kiersten; and Kyle; three great grandchildren; two brothers as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and brothers and sisters-in-law. She was predeceased by her parents, Wilbert and Lydia Meidinger and one brother. Denelda was born on a farm at Schuler, Alberta where her dedication to hard work started. Before meeting Len, she worked as a waitress and in a bakery. They were married in 1953, and she started her career as a wife and mother. She took great satisfaction in making sure her family was taken care of and would always put their needs before hers. She loved her family dearly. Denelda enjoyed her crafts, everything from woodworking to detailed cross stitch with each piece done with creativity and loving care. Together Denelda and Len enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling. She was a good cook and baker, cinnamon buns, butter tarts and bread were her specialty. For awhile she volunteered as a Girl Guide Leader. Her garden was her passion, working endlessly watering, weeding, cultivating and nurturing her plants. She also sold home grown pepper plants and peppers for many years and had numerous long time customers. Denelda was a loving and caring person and will be missed by her family and friends. MARY EMMA WICE February 16th, 1923 ~ April 5th, 2016
It is with deep sadness that the family of Mary Wice announces her passing on Tuesday, April 5th, 2016 at the age of 93 years, surrounded by her family. Mary, one of 5 children, was born in Little Lever, near Bolton, in Lancashire, England to Richard and Cecilia (Wood) Jarvis. She was a good athlete and a capable student. At age 14, Mary left school to work to support her family. At age 15 they all moved to Blackpool. One year later World War II broke out. Mary met a Canadian soldier and her future husband, Frank, in Blackpool at age 20. They exchanged letters 2 or 3 times a week for 18 months while Frank was stationed in Ceylon and married when Mary was 22 on March 6th, 1945. At war’s end, Mary, the war bride, had to wait 12 months for an available ship to join her husband in Saskatoon. She lived in and raised her three children there and in Medicine Hat, where the family moved to in 1960. In England, Mary worked in clothing and biscuit factories, and as a telephonist, as well as in an aircraft factory making Wellington bombers. In Medicine Hat, Mary did the books for Crescent Heights Hardware and Floor Coverings, a business owned by Frank and his brother, Ken. Mary enjoyed dancing, bowling and fishing. She often boasted of catching more fish than Frank. In later years, vacation trips, particularly cruises, brought her great pleasure. She loved flowers and was known for her beautiful letters and special occasion cards, as well as for her preparation of wonderful meals. What absolutely brought her the most pleasure was spending time with her family. She lived in her own home, with support from her children, particularly her son, Cam, until a month before her passing. Mary had a beautiful smile and a kind, gentle nature that was rooted in a positive attitude towards life and a quiet, but strong determination to succeed. She treated everyone with respect and always made visitors to her home feel most welcome. Mary will be missed greatly by her family and friends. Cherishing her memory are her three children, Jarvis (Beverly) Wice of Salmon Arm, BC, Marilyn (Randy) Pocock of Lethbridge, AB, and Cameron Wice of Medicine Hat, AB; her five grandchildren, Adrienne Bootsma of Salmon Arm, Heather (Calum Hughes) Wice of Kelowna, BC, Michelle Pocock of Calgary, AB, Liana (Jonn) Schoolkate of Medicine Hat, AB and David (Chelsea) Pocock of Priddis, AB; her eight grandchildren, Harley and Jaron Bootsma, Malcolm and Grady Hughes, Claudia and Dominic Schoolkate, and Jonah and Hannah Pocock; her numerous nieces and their families; and her sister, Doreen. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Frank Wice in 2002; and her siblings, John Jarvis, Stella Bristow and Richard Jarvis.
