Sports events bring millions of dollars into the city: report

By Lethbridge Herald on July 11, 2024.

Sports events hosted in Lethbridge during the first quarter of 2024 had an economic impact of more than $5 million, according to a report.
The Lethbridge Sport Council on Wednesday said the economic impact from January to March was $5,183,654 for the city and $6,127,009 for the province.
The council says 24 sport organizations provided data for 73 events of 76 events compared to 19 organizations for 51 of 70 events last year with events being hosted at 15 different venues.
The report says there were 10,836 participants, which includes athletes, coaches, managers and technical officials as well as 81,691 spectators with 19,691 of those coming from out of the city.
“What’s remarkable about these numbers is that they were achieved without hosting any major national or international events during this period,” said Susan Eymann, Executive Director of the Lethbridge Sport Council, in a press release.
“This report reflects the amazing work and dedication of our sport volunteers and staff. Their efforts have made a significant impact on our community, showcasing the power of grassroots sport tourism.”
“The work of the Lethbridge Sport Council and the Sport Tourism Advisory Committee is a vital part of our ongoing efforts to bring new events to our city and enhance our economic impact. The impressive growth in the 2024 First Quarter Report highlights these collaborative efforts, and we recognize that there are still many opportunities ahead for us to pursue,” said Senior Director of Communications with Tourism Lethbridge Dominika Wojcik in the release.
