A 58 year-old man has been sentenced to seven months in jail for several criminal offences, including assaulting his girlfriend.
Kevin Gordon Marsh was sentenced after pleading guilty in Lethbridge court of justice to two counts of assault.
At about 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 23 of last year, police received a report from a witness that a woman was lying on the ground and screaming for help while a man stood over her and pushed down on her body.
Police found the victim shortly afterward, and she explained she and Marsh had been in a relationship for some time and met up earlier in the evening where Marsh was living in a tent near Exhibition Park. The two planned to attend the casino, but along the way Marsh became upset and grabbed a bag the woman was carrying and pulled her to the ground.
When she saw a police car in the area and began walking toward it, March got scared and fled. He was found later, however, and charged.
Court was also told that on previous occasions between April and August of 2023, Marsh, who occasionally asked the woman to steal items for him from stores, would become upset when she refused and beat her.
Marsh also pleaded guilty to single charges of mischief and possession of stolen property under $5,000.
During the early morning hours of Sept. 10, 2023, police were notified about a car prowler and someone prowling around the rear patio of a residence north of Henderson Lake Park. While patrolling the area, police saw a man standing near an SUV, but when they turned around to investigate the man was gone. Shortly afterward, however, police heard the sound of breaking glass and saw a man running from an SUV.
The man ran into a yard where police found Marsh hiding under a deck. He had in his possession a wallet and I.D. belonging to someone else, as well as a pry bar and screwdriver.
In addition to the jail sentence, for which Marsh was credited 197 days spent in remand custody, he will also be on probation for 12 months after he is released from custody. Additional charges of housebreaking, mischief and trafficking in persons were withdrawn.
