Mayor welcomes community to annual Whoop-Up Days barbecue

LETHBRIDGE HERALDapulido@lethbridgeherald.com The second annual Mayor’s Community Barbecue took place in front of City Hall Tuesday following the Whoop-Up Days parade, where dozens gathered to enjoy a free lunch while listening to musician Trevor Panczak.Mayor Blaine Hyggen spoke to reporters shortly after flipping some burgers for those patiently waiting in line and said that even though during the parade was a little wet, he was happy to see clear skies for the barbecue so people could enjoy a free lunch.
“It’s great, I had the opportunity to go through the line here and see different people that have come down to enjoy the free lunch and hear Trevor Panczak up there on the stage,” said Hyggen.
 He said this was a chance for the community to get together and celebrate the beginning of Whoop-Up Days.
 “We’ve been through enough over the past few years, and especially with the dry weather we’ve had as of late, it’s good to have this moisture so I can’t complain about that, but it’s nice to have opened up for a little bit,” said Hyggen.
 He said seeing people come out to take part of the Whoop-Up Days kickoff events regardless of the weather shows how strong the community is.
 “That’s Lethbridge. Lethbridge is out in full force rain or shine, that’s the citizens here in Lethbridge,” said Hyggen.
He said he is looking forward taking part in Whoop-Up Days, especially having some elephant ears.
“Who doesn’t love the elephant ears and it’s going to a great cause. The dollars that they’re getting from the elephant ears, they’re changing it up each year, so there’s a different organization that will receive that which is great, so I’m look forward to seeing that,” said Hyggen.
