Making it Big in Lethbridge is no small show

By Theodora MacLeod - Lethbridge Herald Local Journalism Initiative Reporter on August 8, 2023.

The Gallery at Casa is entering the final weeks of the Making it Big in Lethbridge exhibition and with 53 local artists on display, it’s not one to miss.
For the third time, the gallery opened its space to all Lethbridge area artists who were interested in participating in the exhibition.
Curator Darcy Logan calls it part of his Summer Salon series and explains that using the concept vastness and large scale as a theme allowed for a great variety of interpretations from artists.
While some of the pieces are big in physical size, others are standard size but depict large subjects such as the prairie sky.
“Artists have a unique vocabulary to address considerations of scale.” Logan notes.” Artists might reference scale in relationship to the body, the environment, or the space where it is exhibited. It’s all very relative.”
Unlike typical gallery exhibitions, there was no adjudication process for Making it Big in Lethbridge – submissions were open to anyone who wanted to participate.
“What’s really amazing about this show is we have artists that are working at a really professional level that are participating, as well as artists that it’s their first time sharing something publicly with the community,” Logan says.
“People from all backgrounds and levels of experience get to share on an equal footing.”
The show opened in June and has since received positive feedback from the community and thousands of visitors. With works such as an enlarged wood engraving piece that was drawn directly on the wall with markers by Eric Dyck, and an interactive piece about losing a spouse by Loralee Edwards, there are no bounds to the creativity featured.
The Gallery is just one component of CASA, which is a multidisciplinary facility with classes and events in visual art, music, dance, and more. They have been operating since 2013 and recently received certification of reaching 1 million visitors to the building. The exhibit can be found spread throughout the building and there is no charge for admission.
Exhibitions change every seven weeks and the final day to see Making it Big in Lethbridge is Aug. 19.
