With Seniors Week coming to an end, Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre wrapped things up with a bingo and jam session on Friday after a successful week filled with activities.
Program coordinator, Ashley Kern said they had a very good week with many members complimenting the activities they offered, especially the BBQ Picnic event that took place Wednesday.
“There was one lady that was super happy just to come because she’s a pretty new member, so she doesn’t really know too many people and this was a really nice social aspect for her to break the ice in a different space, not necessarily in Nord-Bridge, having a nice offsite casual excuse to get to know more people and she loved it,” said Kern.
She said the member was so delighted by the event that she is already looking forward attending every year from now on.
“This year we had a big turnout, we had approximately 220 people in total, and in the past we would get 160 if we’re lucky, so it was awesome and everyone had so much fun,” said Kern.
Next on their agenda is their first annual Father’s Day Show and Shine BBQ, which will take place Sunday June 18 from 1 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the north parking lot.
“We got about 25 classic cars and trucks that are entered into it already, and there’s going to be food, and some mini pies for sale,” said Kern.
She said in the past they used to do a Father’s Day pie auction, that used to be a sit-down lunch where people could go into the dining room and during that time pies would be auctioned off, and this was a fundraiser for the centre, with the COVID-19 pandemic the interest for the pie auction declined, so they have decided to do something different this year.
“This year the fundraiser is the food basically. We’re keeping it really minimal, it’s free entry and it’s $5 if they want any food. It would be $5 for hotdog, hamburger, chips and pop,” said Kern.
She said they will also be selling mini pies for a small fee and might also have some T-shirts available as a souvenir for the first event of its kind.
“For the Show and Shine everyone is welcome to come. Just because it’s hosted by us doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s just for seniors, this is open to anyone,” said Kern.
