Students and staff from Our Lady of the Assumption school had the opportunity Monday to see the first City organics collection truck receive a name, thanks to a Grade 1 student.
Lincoln Virginillo’s name suggestion of “The Bin-Credible Hulk” was picked for the truck, which will be soon be seen going through city neighbourhoods collecting organics.
Virginillo and his classmates had the opportunity to witness The Bin-Credible Hulk in action Monday morning. They saw the truck pick up an empty green bin with its arm and pretend to dump its contents inside the truck. They were also able to listen to the very loud horn and listen to the back-up alert system.
James Nicholls, Collections Manager of Waste & Environment with the City of Lethbridge, spoke to the students and explained every step of the collection process.
After the demonstration, Virginillo received a gift certificate from the City so he could enjoy a pizza party with his classmates. He also had the opportunity to sit inside The Bin-Credible Hulk for a few minutes.
While speaking to reporters, Nicholls said The Bin-Credible Hulk was one of 14 collection trucks that have been named. The names were selected through a contest the City offered to local elementary students in March.
“We were really excited about the response that we received. We had hundreds of entries; that was really difficult to narrow those down to be 14 total names that we have. We have four garbage trucks, four recycling trucks and six soon-to-be on the road organics trucks that we finally named,” said Nicholls.
He said anytime they have an opportunity to connect to the community, whether it is connecting with adults or children, the City takes the opportunity to do so.
“Naming the trucks really connects people with the trucks that are going through their community on a weekly basis collecting garbage, recycling or organics. So, again something that maybe seems a little abstract to the community, it really brings it home and shows them exactly what they’re doing and how they’re trying to do it,” said Nicholls.
The names selected for the garbage collection trucks are Dumpenstein, Trash Panda, Super Trash Bros. and Oscar.
The names selected for the recycling collection trucks are Bluey, Sonic, Pikablue and Recyclesaurus Rex.
The names selected for the organics collection trucks are The Bin-Credible Hulk, Binderella, Worm’s Delite, Haulin’ Grass, Green Machine and Professor Organical.
To see where The Bin-Credible Hulk and friends are working around the city, check the new live collection truck tracking tool at  https://lethbridgewastepv.azurewebsites.net/
Residents can use the online tool to check if their green, black or blue cart has been collected. The garbage, recycling and organics collection trucks are the third fleet of City vehicles using the tracking technology – this software was previously used for snowplows, and more recently, street sweepers.
