A Lethbridge Crown prosecutor was admittedly bewildered at the conduct of a 22-year-old woman who was convicted of several criminal offences this week in Lethbridge provincial court.
Allysa Jayde Brave Rock didn’t have a criminal record, at least not until Wednesday when she pleaded guilty to three charges of assault, two charges of failure to attend court, and one count of mischief.
Crown Prosecutor Clayton Giles couldn’t explain why Brave Rock was suddenly getting into trouble when she didn’t have any previous run-ins with the law.
“Up until this point, it appears Miss Brave Rock had not attracted any criminal difficulties,” Giles said. “Things appear to have just gone off the rails in a significant way.”
Brave Rock’s assault charges stem from three separate incidents, the first and most serious of which occurred downtown on May 6, 2022 when, for unknown reasons, Brave Rock knocked a man to the ground, then kicked him in the head. That precipitated a mob-style beating as others jumped in and began kicking him, as well.
Brave Rock was involved in another assault in Cardston one evening last year during a dispute between Brave Rock and a man at an apartment complex where the two individuals were tenants. While the two were arguing, Brave Rock struck the man in the back of the head with her elbow.
The third assault occurred last month at Streets Alive Mission where, according to staff, a woman was simply sitting and minding her own business when Brave Rock approached her and, for no apparent reason, punched her.
“I’m unsure what the issue is here, but she needs to understand that this type of ongoing violence simply can’t go on,” Giles said.
The mischief charge stems from an incident in April when Brave Rock and another person went to a dollar store in the middle of the night. Brave Rock picked up a rock from the parking lot and threw it at the window, causing about $1,000 damage.
Brave Rock also failed to attend court on two occasions, first on Oct. 3, 2022 and again on Oct. 31.
Brave Rock was sentenced to 60 days in jail for the May 6 assault, and given a 12-month suspended sentence with probation for the assault at Streets Alive, and for throwing a rock at the Dollar Store window.
She was fined $200 for striking the man in the head with her elbow, and $100 for each of the failures to attend court.
After being given credit for time she has already spent in custody, Brave Rock only has 21 days left on her sentence for the assault. And instead of paying the fines, she will serve the default time of one day in custody, to be served concurrently with the jail sentence.
As part of her probation, Brave Rock is not to go to any Dollar Store in the province, and she is to be assessed and receive counselling for substance abuse and anger management.
Brave Rock also faces additional charges of shoplifting, housebreaking and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. Those matters were addressed Thursday in court and adjourned until today.
