New indoor bicycle racks at the YMCA of Lethbridge are being dedicated to a city woman with a long-time involvement in promoting active living here.
Carol Thibert was honoured on Thursday with the unveiling of the racks inside the Cor Van Raay YMCA in a joint initiative between that organization and the Lethbridge Sport Council.
The indoor racks will allow patrons to safely lock their bicycles in view of staff and other patrons while also serving to encourage active transportation to the facility.
A sign on the racks features a map of trails in the city leading to and around the YMCA.
Thibert, who retired seven years ago from the City of Lethbridge, has made a lasting impact on the community, said Erin Low, chair of the sport council during the unveiling of the racks.
Low also thanked the YMCA for making the recognition a reality.
“Few individuals have done more for sport, recreation and culture in our community than Carol Thibert. She was a founding member of the Lethbridge Sport Fit committee and Lethbridge Sport Council. Through Carol’s professional and volunteer commitments and exceptional leadership, thousands of individuals and groups have benefited. Carol has always been a fierce advocate for sport and active recreation and role models that lifestyle herself,” said Low, saying Thibert has made a lasting impact on the community.
“This is a huge honour,” said Thibert.
The work she did with the City and the sport council “really gave me the opportunity to do what I really love and sort of help impart on other people what I really love,” said Thibert.
During the unveiling Thibert was called a health enthusiast who has impacted and inspired many in the city to be healthier through activity.
Joanna Jones, director of operations of the YMCA of Lethbridge, said the indoor racks will encourage active transportation throughout the year.
“We’re so excited to finally have the indoor bike racks,” she said.
