The Helen Schuler Nature Centre in partnership with the Galt Museum and Archives, Fort Whoop-Up, SAAG, and New West Theatre is offering the Coulees and Culture Summer Day Camp this week.
The program allows participants between the ages of six to ten years of age to learn, grow and play at a new venue each day.
On Monday participants were at Helen Schuler Nature Centre following the theme of nature detectives and for the rest of the week they will visit the partnering venues.
“Every day it’s something different, it’s kind of like a taster pack of all the different cultural attractions in Lethbridge,” said Taylor Hecker, program leader at Helen Schuler Nature Centre.
At the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Monday, the participants were practicing their detective skills by solving a mystery that involved items stolen from different animals around the centre.
“They had to find some clues and figure out where those items were, who they belong to and return them and along the way we’re learning about some clues that animals leave behind, learning about animal tracking and identifying animal science and stuff,” said Hecker.
Eight-year-old participant Holden Molly said they found the stolen items all in one place.
“We found them in the gazebo at the top of the coulee just outside of the centre,” said Molly.
He said after they had to follow the instructions to find them.
Participants were giving a GPS to find the coordinates of the places where the items should be returned to, taking turns using the gadget and being the leader to guide the group to the proper place.
Molly, who has been involved with the program in previous years, said he is looking forward to the activities at the other venues.
“At the Galt we did some history stuff, at the SAAG we did some art stuff, at the Fort we talked about the Blackfoot and did a lot of colouring sheets and had ice cream. That was great,” said Molly.
He said at the New West Theatre they made puppets in 2021 and after making them, they had a puppet show.
