Local author Darcy Tamayose’s new book Ezra’s Ghosts launched Thursday at a local bookstore with more than 40 people in attendance where Tamayose offered a reading and autographs.
The launch took place at Analog Books alongside two other local authors and Tamayose said it was wonderful to support a local independent bookstore. Each author read a five minute story from their book and after that they answered questions.
“We wanted to do something that might help other people who are maybe writing or wanting to get published. We wanted to make it helpful for people,” said Tamayose.
Tamayose answered questions about the writing process, strategies and gave tips to those in attendance during the Q&A session.
Her book is a compilation of four stories that relate to each other.
“The first story, the thesis, and the last story Redux are related and they serve as bookends and then the two stories in the middle of The Ryukyu and Ghost Fly are very dense so they’re in the middle,” said Tamayose.
She said the inspiration for her books came from her father, her grad studies and her PhD work. She said she is very grateful for Newest Press because they were very patient with her as the book took many years to finish.
“When I finish that first story The Ryukyu, and I sent it to the publisher of new West press, he had a lot of faith in it. So much so that he asked me for more stories and he waited for several years for me to have all four stories in the collection completed,” said Tamayose.
Now many will have the opportunity to read Tamayose’s magical realism stories which have a local connection, not only by being on local shelves but because of the magical realism of the places mentioned within the stories.
Analog Books owner Penny Warris said the launch was the first event their establishment was able to held since they opened in December, 2020.
“We’ve always been under restrictions and so it’s the first time that we’ve been able to have an event that allowed us to have more people in it and so we certainly had a full house last night,” said Warris.
She said more than 40 people came to the event and many of them purchased Tamayose’s book on the spot.
Warris said the event felt intimate even though so many were in attendance.
“I really feel like there’s something that happens when there’s a bunch of people in a room talking about books,” said Warris.
She said that Tamayose’s book had pre-sales which they have never experienced before.
“We certainly saw a huge difference compared to other events that we’ve had, not only the pre-sales but the sales of those books and others last night,” said Warris.
