Lethbridge College offered prospective students the opportunity to explore the University transferable options from different programs at the college Friday afternoon.
The University Transfer Mini Fair took place at the Garden Court Restaurant, where interested future students had the opportunity to learn about university transfer opportunities in the college’s General Arts and Science program and entered a draw for a chance to win free tuition for a year.
Dean of the Centre for Business, Arts and Science Kevin Smith said they decided this year rather than just have an open house they would push certain priorities within their courses.
“Today’s is just about university transfer and getting the message across that you don’t have to go to university right away in order to then get a degree, you can do courses here that have automatic transfer,” said Smith.
He said students can do two years, get a diploma and then transfer to a university and do a specialized degree.
“People don’t want to immediately move to Calgary or somewhere else in Alberta, so they can do two years here, get used to post-secondary and then move on to a specialized degree,” said Smith.
He said about 95 per cent of General Arts and Science courses are transferable to colleges and universities across Canada and around the world.
Associate Dean for the Centre for Business, Arts and Sciences Marda Schindeler said that because in the last couple of years, the campus has not been as available or open to local high school students, they wanted to provide an opportunity for students to come and see who they are, what they do and to make sure that they are aware of the pathways that the college has to offer.
“We’ve had a number of students, teachers and counsellors from local high schools here to visit, meet with faculty and tour some of our spaces as well,” said Schindeler.
