City wrestles waste water lagoon levels under control

City staff have managed to lower levels of the lagoons at the Waste Water Treatment plant this week.The City, in response to an inquiry from The Herald, said Thursday that earlier in the week “the lagoons at the Waste Water Treatment Plant reached a level that was unsustainable with our normal management practises.”
The Herald was alerted to the lagoon levels by a city resident on Wednesday.
The City says staff regularly monitor lagoon levels and when they determined there was a potential risk for overflow, steps were immediately taken to ensure that didn’t happen.
“Mitigation efforts over the last several days have helped shore up the lagoons against overflow and created additional capacity. Staff have significantly increased the return back to the plant and adjusted operating parameters which have helped drop the levels in the lagoons,” said the City statement.
The City also says steps have been to taken to plan for and investigate more mid-range solutions including doubling the annual sludge haul from the lagoons and securing temporary storage locations.
The City added “it is normal to see the lagoon levels high at this time of year.” 2
