Local auto history races to the finish line

By Dale Woodard - Lethbridge Herald on February 8, 2022.

This history lesson went right into overdrive.
An automotive history of southern Alberta and some very familiar Lethbridge names was firmly in gear as the Galt Museum’s Hands On History hosted the Cool Cars program Saturday afternoon at the museum.
“It’s to go along with the exhibition we have in the hallway called Magnificent Motoring, which is about the history of cars and motoring in southern Alberta,” said Janae Redgrave, community program coordinator at The Galt. “There is a wonderful selection of photographs and objects from our archives and collections that highlight that story.”
Saturday’s program had a short power point presentation to explain the history of cars in Lethbridge, including information about the first car in Lethbridge being owned by Elliott Galt.
“So that obviously has a connection to us here at the Galt Museum,” said Redgrave. “We’re named after Sir Alexander Galt and Elliott Galt was his son and a founding community member of Lethbridge.”
On Saturday, children and parents alike got in the driver’s seat with some art supplies.
“The kids are making a mini car,” said Redgrave. “We have some corrugated plastic. They get to decorate it and it’s powered by a balloon. So they blow through the straw, it blows up the balloon, they let it go and the car whizzes away.”
Saturday’s Cool Cars program was the first Hands On History of the calendar year, offering an opportunity for people to learn some local history and do a hands-on activity with their family, said Redgrave.
On Feb. 23 the Galt will host A Day of Knights.
“We have some knights coming and they’re going to be dressed up and do some demonstrations,” said Redgrave. “Then kids will get some pool noodles and they’ll be able to fight a knight as well as make a mini sword and crown.”
