The Lethbridge Branch of the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Association (ARMTA) will be virtually hosting their Spring Student General Recital 2022 in March.
“Our next event coming up in the middle of March will be holding a live Zoom recital so students will perform in their homes and we will hold that as a live Zoom call,” said Christine Rogers, president of the Lethbridge branch of ARMTA.
Rogers said the organization is a group of over 400 music teachers who are part of ARMTA and in Lethbridge they have over 20 members.
“As part of our group and throughout the year, we offer events for students and teachers. We usually have four or five recital events per year for students, and then we try to have at least one professional development opportunity for teachers in the community,” said Rogers.
The Spring Student General Recital 2022 comes shortly after their celebration of Canada Music Week in November 2021, where the Lethbridge Branch of ARMTA produced a video of students playing works by Canadian Composers. The video was viewed by students, teachers and families by Zoom on Nov. 27, 2021. Â
“It was a watch party. Students prepared performances of pieces by Canadian composers and they were put into a movie format that we could show on a live Zoom call,” said Rogers.
The video recital featured 19 students performing selections by Canadian composers including Anne Crosby Gaudet, Christine Donkin, Nancy Telfer, Linda Niamath, Oscar Peterson, and local composer, Lavinia Kell Parker. Â
Students participated in a scavenger hunt for clues about Canadian composers on informational slides that were part of the video recital.
Rogers said the event in November was a combination of a recital and their annual awards program.
“Usually what we do, is we have a recital in-person and then after the recital we present students with awards, students who have got high marks on exams,” said Rogers.
She said that since they were unable to have the recital in person, they sent the awards to the teachers who presented them to their students.
