A Lethbridge woman who nearly struck a pedestrian with her car has received a fine under the Traffic Safety Act.
Tracy Marie Homan had been charged under the Criminal Code with dangerous driving, impaired driving and driving with an alcohol level over the legal limit, but she pleaded guilty Monday in Lethbridge provincial court to the lesser charge of careless driving. She was fined $500 and levied a surcharge of $100.
Defence had recommended a fine of $300, but Judge Jerry LeGrandeur said the suggested amount was too low, especially since the offence fell just short of dangerous driving and Homan exhibited a “high level (of) carelessness.”
Homan was speeding along a major thoroughfare in Lethbridge last year, but instead of stopping for a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the street at a crosswalk, sped through the intersection, nearly striking the pedestrian.
The pedestrian, court was told, had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck.
Crown Prosecutor Sheena Campbell said a police officer saw the incident and conducted a traffic stop.
“Nobody was hurt in this instance,” Campbell added.

***The headline in today’s print edition of the Lethbridge Herald incorrectly stated the pedestrian was hit by the car – the Herald apologizes for the error.
