Man receives jail sentence on multiple charges

A 36-year-old Lethbridge man who pleaded guilty in August to charges of housebreaking and commit theft, criminal harassment and failure to comply with release conditions, has been sent to jail for a year and placed on probation for 18 months.
Jordan James Sargeant, who was sentenced Wednesday in Lethbridge provincial court, cried quietly as he waived goodbye to his mother and girlfriend and was then ushered out of the courtroom to begin his sentence.
On Aug. 13, 2019 Sargeant broke into a rural, residential garage and stole an air compressor and gas can. Although the owners were not home, they had installed a security system, and while driving through Montana accessed their security surveillance camera using their cellphone and saw Sargeant on their property.
In an unrelated incident on May 15, 2020, Sargeant tried to return a cellphone to Walmart, but when staff would not accept the return, Sargeant pointed his fingers like a gun and said he would return.
He did return two days later, and while yelling at security personnel, he pulled out what appeared to be a handgun, prompting security to retreat. Sargeant left before police arrived, but they found him a short time later, and found in his backpack a wallet and a C02 cartridge for an airsoft gun, but no gun.
“I didn’t point a gun at anybody,” Sargeant said during the hearing in August.
On Oct. 16, 2020, while on release conditions to not have any contact with his mother or go to her residence, Sargeant went to her home. The woman heard a loud bang, and when she went to investigate she saw her son, who yelled and demanded she hand over the dog.
His mother told him to leave, but he went to the back door and kicked it in. As he advanced toward the frightened woman, the dog appeared and Sargeant left with it.
Sargeant admitted breaking into his mother’s house, but added he paid a contractor to fix the door the next day.
Lethbride lawyer Greg White told court his client, who has a substance abuse addiction, knew he would be going to jail, yet he voluntarily attended court Wednesday and takes responsibility for his actions.
White said Sargeant wants to be rehabilitated and does not want to suffer from drug abuse the rest of his life.
“He wants that monkey off his back.”
Moments before being led out of the courtroom, Sargeant said he is fortunate to have a loving and caring family who support him.
“Without them I would have nobody,” he said.
