Two-by-four assault results in jail time

LETHBRIDGE HERALDdshurtz@lethbridgeherald.com A man who nearly tore off part of the ear of another man he attacked in downtown Lethbridge last month, will spend some time behind bars.John Twigg was sentenced last week in Lethbridge provincial court to three months in jail for assaulting the man, as well as a woman who was with him, just before 2 a.m. May 16.
Court was told the man and woman were at a gas station when another man and woman came up behind them and the assailant began hitting his victim with a large stick or two-by-four. The two men began wrestling on the ground, and when Twigg stood up, he struck the other man in the head with the stick, nearly severing his left earlobe.
The woman with the victim was punched and kicked when she intervened to help her friend, and sustained bruises to her head and face.
The victims went to Harbour House downtown following the attack, and the police were contacted.
Lethbridge lawyer Claudia Connolly explained Twigg’s girlfriend actually instigated the confrontation after she told Twigg she needed his help.
“Regardless, he admits to his involvement,” Connolly said.
Twigg pleaded guilty to charges of assault and assault with a weapon, for which he was sentenced to 30 days and 90 days respectively. The sentences, however, will run concurrently.
Twigg, who was given credit for 57 days spent in pre-trial custody, leaving him with 33 days to serve, must also submit a sample of his DNA for the National DNA Databank. Follow @DShurtzHerald on Twitter 4
