Henderson Lake Pool is opening just in time to give respite from a heat spell hitting southern Alberta this weekend.
The city pool opens Friday with reduced capacity and Stage 2 COVID-19 restrictions in place.
Sunni Belle, general manager of Recreation Excellence Pools, said the pool will operate on a first-come, first-served basis with four 90-minute swimming sessions daily between noon and 7:30 p.m.
Pool users are being urged to come early since the facility is a popular one. Pre-pay will be available one hour before sessions, each of which will have a capacity of 350 people.
Change rooms will be closed but washrooms will be open for patrons, who will be expected to follow social distancing protocols. A COVID-19 monitor will be onsite to make sure patrons are keeping a two-metre distance between themselves and others, Belle said.
“The City of Lethbridge is very excited to welcome the public back,” Belle told media assembled at the pool Wednesday.
“The change rooms will be closed, however the washrooms and facilities will be open during your swim. The family change rooms on deck will also be open for those who need to change little ones.
“We’re hoping the restrictions will be changing after July 1. We are waiting for the public health order to be released prior to releasing what that looks like,” said Belle.
“It’s really important for the public to check the online schedules,” she said.
“There is lots of space for people to enjoy themselves without worry or concern,” said Belle.
All the amenities will be open at the pool, Belle said, aside from the concession. But it will open later in the season.
Coolers are being limited this year with no big ones allowed, she said.
Small backpacks and backpack coolers are acceptable as well as sealed containers.
Swimming lessons will be offered this summer as well as class for Zumba, Fit and Aqua Jog.
For the time being, Nicholas Sheran and Fritz Sick pools will remain closed.
