M.D. council reviews three lease tenders

By Cole Parkinson on April 14, 2021.

Tenders have been received for three pieces of Municipal District of Taber land.
After council approved the tendering process for 30 acres of dry pasture near Grassy lake, nine acres of dry pasture near Purple Springs and 13 acres with Taber Irrigation District irrigation rights near Johnson’s Addition at council’s Feb. 23 meeting, the results were back in front of councillors at their March 23 meeting.
Reeve Merrill Harris stepped out of council chambers due to a conflict of interest.
Grassy Lake (three-year lease) bids came from Corns Farm and Ranch ($600 including taxes) and Corny Fehr ($500 including taxes).
Purple Springs (three-year lease) bids came from Issac and Helena Wall ($3,000 including GST), Johan and Maria Knelseen ($682.50 including GST) and Emil and Beverley Spengler ($210 including GST).
Johnson’s Addition (five-year lease) bids came from Double H Spud Farms ($4,095 including GST) and Johnson Farms ($2,050 including GST).
“Administration is recommending acceptance of these bids for all three properties. The one in Purple Springs was a fairly high bid and I have talked to this fellow two times just to ensure and confirm his bid and understood what he was getting for that bid. He does understand that,” added Brian Peers, director of Municipal Lands and Leases and Economic Planning and Development.
Council made separate motions to approve the highest bid with all three being approved unanimously. Coun. Brian Brewin was absent from the meeting.
