Power outage delays court proceedings in the city

It wasn’t exactly business as usual Wednesday at the Lethbridge Courthouse.
As if COVID-19 hasn’t interrupted court proceedings enough the past year, Wednesday’s power outage interrupted them even more, delaying some cases by hours, and others by days and even weeks.
A two-week trial for a Cardston company, Taurus Natural Inc., was delayed for a couple of hours before it was able to resume. The company faces several charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, alleging it failed to ensure the health and safety of 41-year-old Scott Forsyth, who died on the job in January 2018.
But even though the trial continued, other court hearings were adjourned.
Courtroom 1, which was scheduled to hear criminal docket matters from Lethbridge and Fort Macleod, closed its doors shortly before power was restored.
Lethbridge cases which were adjourned Wednesday are set to be heard today in Courtroom 1, as are Fort Macleod matters for accused persons who are in custody. Fort Macleod matters for people who are not in custody and whose last names begin with the letters A to M will be heard next Wednesday, while out-of-custody matters for people whose last names begin with the letters N to Z will be heard Jan. 27.
