City business charged with contravening health order

One business was found in non-compliance of the Public Health Act Monday and charged under Section 73(1) for contravening a public health order. They were served an Appearance Notice for a court date on Jan. 22, 2021.
The Lethbridge Police Service assisted Alberta Health Services in checking a number of businesses which had publicly stated they were going to open Monday in contravention of the Public Health Act.
The LP and Alberta Health Services continued to work in co-ordination Monday to address the potential opening of several businesses in contravention of mandatory provincial health restrictions.
“Both AHS and LPS are aware of recent ‘call to action’ posts on social media regarding business concerns over COVID-19 health measures,” said the LPS in a release.
“As the matter falls under Alberta Health Services’ jurisdiction, Lethbridge Police will provide them with assistance as required, and forward to them any specific complaints received from the public.
“The priority of the Lethbridge Police Service continues to be the safety and well-being of the entire community, and we will work with our citizens and other agencies to ensure that. Updates on any related enforcement issues in this regard will be provided as appropriate.”
According to Alberta Health, if a business owner or member of the public violates a public health order, they could be subject to a $1,000 fine or prosecuted for up to $100,000 depending on the seriousness of the offence.
