The total solar eclipse has now entered Canada in southwestern Ontario, according to the University of Toronto’s Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics.
The solar eclipse’s path of totality will pass through parts of Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada before exiting North America at 3:46 p.m. eastern time.
Eclipse watchers were cast into darkness as the sun moved directly behind the moon.
The moment has been celebrated as a chance for Earth-bound audiences to share in a moment of celestial awe.
Astronaut David Saint-Jacques says people under the path of a total solar eclipse may be able to glimpse giant solar flares bursting into the cosmos.
While the next total solar eclipse in Canada is expected to pass through western provinces in 20 years, the phenomenon only happens in any given location roughly once every 360 years by some estimates.
