Trudeau ‘closely monitoring’ situation in Poland as Biden calls emergency meeting

OTTAWA – U.S. President Joe Biden has called an “emergency” gathering of G7 and NATO leaders in Indonesia, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying Canada is “closely monitoring” the situation.

Biden gathered the urgent meeting of like-minded leaderson the sidelines of the G20 summit after Poland said Tuesday that a Russian-made missile hit its territory and killed two people.

Trudeau, who is also in Bali for the summit, tweeted shortly before attending the meetingthat he is being briefed on the latest developments and he was sending his deepest condolences to the Polish people.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly told reporters on the sidelines of the G20 that she expected “important meetings” with allies on Wednesday, as NATO scrambles over how to respond to a potential escalation of war between Russia and Ukraine.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said information about the missile’s origin was still being verified and officials don’t know for sure who fired it, though it is “most probably” Russian-made.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also called an emergency meeting of the military alliance’s envoys to discuss the events.
