The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education is supporting grassroots projects throughout the month by raising funds to support education, health and human rights projects in Guerrero, a southwestern state in Mexico.

Today is recognized as the “Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe,” or “Mission Mexico Day,” and began as a project for St. Mary’s Parish in Cochrane in 2000.

The project has since expanded to other parishes in the Diocese of Calgary, and Dec. 12 was declared the Feast of Our Lady Guadalupe by Bishop Henry, who served as the seventh Bishop in Calgary between 1998 and 2017, and who recently passed away on Dec. 3.

The outreach project focuses on building schools, libraries, housing and micro-economic self-help projects for families in La Montaña, a remote village located in the mountains of southern Mexico.

The feast commemorates the Virgin Mary’s appearance in Mexico in the 1500s, a significant saint in the culture of many Mexicans.

The division says it will be raising funds in its own “unique ways,” however if you would like to support the project you can visit missionmexico.com. All donations directly support ongoing humanitarian projects in La Montaña.
