On Monday, Brooks RCMP apprehended Kayl Libke after responding to an assault at the 7-Eleven convenience store located on Sutherland Drive in that city.

Upon arrival police found a male victim with noticeable cuts and bruises on his face. The victim directed officers toward the direction the suspect had fled on foot, and police were able to arrest Libke after conducting patrols in the area and engaging in a brief foot chase.

Simultaneously, a local peace officer reported finding a stolen SUV from Public Works and reported it to the detachment. Police confirm the SUV was stolen and found paperwork belonging to Libke inside the vehicle.

Libke was transported to remand and was charged with assault, obstruction, possession of stolen property and three counts of failure to comply. Libke appeared in court Wednesday.

A female driver of the SUV was also taken into custody and police have not said if she has been charged in the incident.

Highway collisions

Brooks RCMP responded to two serious highway collisions this past weekend as the region experienced a heavy snowfall event that affected travel on local highways.

On Dec. 9 at 5;19 p.m. police ticketed the driver of a van following a collision at the intersection of Highway 873 and Township Road 192 that sent passengers of a truck to the hospital.

RCMP say witnesses reported a westbound commercial delivery van failed to stop at the stop sign and collided with a northbound truck, causing both vehicles to end up in the ditch.

In a press release, police say passengers of the truck were taken to hospital by EMS but did not mention how many people were injured in the collision.

The driver of the van received an unknown number of tickets.

The following morning on Dec. 10 shortly after 7 a.m. RCMP responded to a collision on Highway 542 caused by icy road conditions.

Police say upon arrival they found a westbound SUV had lost control on ice and fishtailed, subsequently colliding with the rear end of an oncoming truck.

No injuries were reported for the incident. Officers managed traffic while EMS were able to assess everyone involved.

Corp. Sharon McCready is reminding motorists to slow down in bad weather and make sure you’re prepared for unexpected delays.

“Make sure that you have an emergency bag in your vehicle. Make sure you have some sort of fire source, like candles and matches, make sure you have some blankets, some food and water.”

Tuesday morning the Medicine Hat Police Service responded to the scene of a motor vehicle collision along the Trans-Canada Highway at Third Street NW.
