SaskPower will receive $256.7 million in clean electricity funding from Ottawa to upgrade the Crown power provider’s system in that province, upsize an interconnection to the U.S. grid system and hook up renewable power projects.

The announcement, made Dec. 5, is funded through the output-based industrial carbon levy and includes funding for computer modelling and management, along with capital projects.

An interconnection between the Saskatchewan power grid and the U.S.-based Southwest Power Pool will be upgraded with the aid of $78.9 million in the announcement.

The Government of Saskatchewan has yet to comment on the funding.

Almost $57 million will go to a 60-megawatt battery storage system installed in the Regina area.

Another $69.9 million will replace and upgrade underground lines in rural areas, $13.7 million to connect planned renewable projects in south-central Saskatchewan and $22.3 million for home retrofits in northern communities.

Another $12 million from the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways program will fund the connection of six Indigenous-led solar projects across the province.
