Cypress County has issued a development permit for a major solar field planned for the far northeast of the county.

The Estuary Solar project would be built by applicant IndyGen on one section of land leased from the Hutterite Breathren of Estuary, located about two kilometres north of McNeill, Alta., south of the South Saskatchewan River valley.

It was approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission on Sept. 5 with a completion date in January 2026.

The county application states the facility would be monitored remotely, though six to eight permanent employees would visit the site several times each week for routine maintenance.

The 30,000 panels would produce 200 megawatts of electricity in peak conditions and shunt power onto the AltaLink power grid via a new substation.

That was also permitted by the county following the Nov. 12 meeting of the municipal planning commission along with a temporary construction lay-down yard.
