Regional unemployment ticks up while provincial jobless rate jumps up

The jobless rate in southern Alberta rose slightly in September to 6.1 per cent, according to new data released by Statistics Canada on Friday, while the rate for the entire province rose steeply.

Alberta’s overall unemployment rate jumped by 1.5 percentage points compared to the fall of 2023, and now sits at 7.4 per cent.

That was led by a 2.6-point increase in Edmonton (now at 8.6 per cent) and a 1.2-point increase in Calgary (now 7.2 per cent).

Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake (7.2 per cent) and Camrose-Drumheller (4.7 per cent) also rose higher in the recent month, while Banff-Grande Prairie region (5.1 per cent) fell by one point.

In Saskatchewan, the rate in the Swift Current-Moose Jaw region rose by 1.5 points to 5.4 per cent, and that province’s overall rate rose to 5.8 per cent.
