As the leaves change, road work crews are preparing to wrap up a long list of projects ahead of the end of the construction season this fall.
Last month, crews opened the intersection on Second Avenue and Eighth Street on the Southeast Hill, featuring a new traffic circle meant to keep down speeds recorded as high as 80 kilometres per hour in the residential neighbourhood in 2023.
That coincides with general waterline and sewer work in the older community, and work has now blocked off the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street. The entire project has a stated completion date of October 31.
That is part of annual water and sanitary system replacement budget of $5 million in 2024, including work on Maple Avenue and at First Street near Red Deer Drive in the southwest.
Nearby, work is continuing on the narrowing of Division Avenue South to include a multi-use pathway from Third Street to the bottom of Old Cemetery Road, though portions have reopened. The $5-million corridor update is schedule to be complete by Nov. 29.
Downtown, crews from Hamm Construction moved to the final phase of Third Street reconstruction on Sept. 17, ahead of a scheduled conclusion on Nov. 15. A phase in 2025 will involve water, sewer, sidewalk and roadway replacement along the 300 block of Sixth Avenue, though that previously announced work is now listed as “subject to budget approval” on the city’s project list.
Seventh Street N.W., is also undergoing full deep utility replacements, replacing clay lines in most instance, similar to Eighth Street on the Hill.
Storm sewer lining in the Flats has been underway since June.
Already completed is work on several major routes:
– Dunmore Road resurfacing ended in early September with the removal of a spur rail line and resurfacing of the Shannon Bridge near the intersection with Kingsway Avenue;
– Resurfacing Altawana Drive, including some utility work and retaining wall work near Eighth Street in Crescent Heights, was completed earlier this summer within the $2.5-million resurfacing budget.
