A man charged with four counts of attempted murder after a shotgun went off during a standoff with Medicine Hat police this summer has been held on an emergency mental health order and will be further assessed over the next month.

Cole Scory, 30, appeared at Court of Justice in Medicine Hat on Thursday morning via CCTV from Calgary Remand Centre. It was the first appearance for Scory who was arrested at an apartment complex in the city’s southwest on July 27.

Over the last eight weeks, Crown and duty counsel lawyers repeatedly adjourned the matter stating the accused was in hospital and contact could not be made.

On Thursday, defence lawyer Scott Hadford told court he had been appointed “amicus curiae” – a legal professional assigned to observe proceedings on behalf of a defendant, but not technically a legal representative.

Crown prosecutor Marni McKay informed court that Scory had been subject of an emergency mental health order after his arrest, during which he was physically injured.

On recommendation of attending psychiatrist, she applied far and was granted an order to complete assessment of Scory’s capacity to stand trial.

Hadford took no position and Justice Brant ordered the assessment be returned to court at its next date on Oct. 24.

In custody

Two individuals recently arrested on gun charges in the city are being held in custody after initial court appearances this week.

Cody Gregory Feaver-Gonslaves, 26, is charged with intentionally discharging a firearm among other gun charges and possessing a controlled substance. His matter in court on Thursday was adjourned in order to contact a lawyer.

Kaden Bernard Schenkey, 39, was arrested during a traffic stop on Sept. 19 by local officers and members of the ALERT organized crime team. Authorities say search warrants then produced 11 firearms along with quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine.

His attorney, Emmanuel Abellera of the Calgary firm Scory Law, requested the matter be adjourned until next week to allow conversations with his client who has been denied bail and is being held at the Medicine Hat Remand Centre.
