34-year-old man, with a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest, caused injuries to himself after discharging his firearm during a daytime altercation with police on Saturday and has been secured and transported by EMS to hospital.

On Friday police responded to a report for a domestic dispute at a local residence, however the male had left the home prior to police arrival and extensive efforts were made to locate the man.

On Saturday police received information the suspect was at a home located in the 400 block of 8th Street SE, and upon arrival found a man outside a home in possession of a firearm.

Police say the man was uncooperative as officers attempted to gain compliance by using de-escalation techniques that were unsuccessful.

Officers shot at the man with less-lethal impact rounds to prevent him from entering a nearby residence, which led to the man discharging his firearm. According to police the man inflicted self-injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.

The Criminal Investigation Section will continue to investigate the shooting. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been notified of the shooting and has deemed the incident to be out of its scope for investigation.

At this time police have not released the suspect’s name, or his current condition in hospital. No charges have been released.
