The number of property tax appeals in Medicine Hat for 2024 appears to have been cut in half from recent years.

The city clerk’s office reports to the News that seven homeowners officially challenged tax assessments by a deadline in May, while 35 appeals relate to apartment, condo or business properties.

At last report, only one of the 42 current-year appeals has been withdrawn.

Last year, a total of 74 appeals were filed, though only 10 proceeded to a hearing by either the Local Assessment Review Board (single-family residential) or Composite Assessment Review Board (apartments or commercial).

Of those, five were withdrawn and 59 adjusted by agreement of owner and assessor.

Of the 10 heard by appeals board, eight were denied and two were adjusted.

In 2022 the totals were five homes and 72 non-residential or multi-family appeals, a steep increase from 38 in total in 2021.
