To accommodate supply plan delays, the City of Medicine Hat has granted a construction extension to the ongoing upgrades to the Kinsmen Aquatic Park in the Big Marble Go Centre.

While it was originally slated to reopen mid-September, the aquatic park is now expected to be available to the public on Oct. 11. BMGC patrons may notice the pools filling with water as early as Sept. 20, but may be surprised to know it takes at least one full week to fill the KAP from empty.

Regulatory water sampling and laboratory testing is required before the pool can be cleared for public use, while staff is trained on the proper operation of the newly installed systems.

Membership and admission fee adjustments in place for construction will also be extended until Oct. 11.

Other pools in the city remain open in the meantime however, with Hill Pool scheduled to remain open until Sept. 29, weather permitting, and the historically Monday-to-Saturday Crestwood Recreation Centre will continue to operate 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays for the foreseeable future.

After the Hill Pool closes and is drained for the season, crews will begin maintenance during fall 2024 and spring 2025 and will renew infrastructure that has reached the end of its useful life to keep the facility operating efficiently.

This year’s work will include new pool circulation components, crack repair, painting, lighting repair/upgrades, fencing, sun shades and more.
