Tuesday the Medicine Hat Public School division released school bus routes for students including bus number, stop location and pickup and drop-off times.

Routes for registered riders can be accessed online at mhpsd.ca/route-maps.

Unregistered students can still ride the bus for a two-week grace period if they haven’t received their bus pass yet, and will not be turned away without a pass.

Bus passes are expected to be delivered to all schools in the first couple weeks of classes.

Parents and guardians still looking to register a child for the bus can do so by logging onto the PowerSchool Parent site and choosing the SchoolEngage tab from the navigation menu on the bottom left corner of the screen.

Questions can also be directed to Transportation Coordinator Robert Olson by phone at 403-528-6572, or by email trasportation@sd76.ab.ca.

Traffic Safety Tips

The province has released a list of traffic safety tips for motorists driving in school zones as a new school year approaches.

They are reminding drivers to respect the flashing lights on a school bus that are used to create a safety zone for students.

Slow down and stop when a school bus activates its alternatively flashing red lights. These red lights mean you must stop no matter if you are approaching an oncoming school bus or following one.

Drivers are to proceed only when the red lights on the bus have stopped flashing. The only exception to this rule is when the school bus is on the opposite side of a two-way highway and physically divided by a median.

The penalty for failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights is $567 and six demerit points.

The province also reminds motorists the speed limit for both urban and rural school zones is 30 km/h unless otherwise posted, and drivers can not pass or attempt to pass others vehicles in a school zone.
