Thirty-year-old Cole Scory of Medicine Hat has been charged with four counts of attempted murder with a firearm after he opened fire and injured several officers July 27 who were responding to a weapons complaint in a four-plex apartment building located in the 200 block of Eighth Street SW.

Scory has also been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm without a licence and other firearms related offences following the investigation by the Major Crimes Unit.

Police were originally called to the scene to investigate a complaint from a civilian that a gun was discharged by an occupant of a suite in the apartment building.

Officers quickly evacuated several occupants from the building when they arrived on scene. As an officer was standing by the front entrance glass door a gun was discharged from within the suite, which injured several of the attending officers. A large hole could be seen in the door.

Police immediately returned fire and retreated from the building as tactical members arrived and later removed Scory, who was injured, from the building.

Scory was transported to hospital with gunshot wounds. Police were able to recover a shotgun style firearm from Scory’s apartment suite.

On Aug. 2, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which was called in to investigate the officer involved shooting, released an update that included a photo of the firearm police seized.

Due to the ongoing nature of both ASRIT and Medicine Hat Police Service investigations no additional details will be provided by law enforcement.

The News has requested an update on the condition of the injured officers and is awaiting a response from police, however according to their Facebook page the “involved police officers are recovering from their injuries.”

Scory remains in stable condition and is in custody. No information on when his first court appearance will take place has been released.

Police are also asking anyone who has not already been interviewed but may have been in the area and witnessed any of the events unfolding, or may have a video, to contact Major Crimes Unit investigators at 403-529-8481.
