Firefighters sprang into action Saturday evening to extinguish a structure fire on the 300 block of Fourth Street SE after crews noticed heavy smoke coming from the downtown area.

Upon arrival, crews called for additional resources, and according to a social media post, “Initiated a fast, aggressive fire attack. Additional units arrived and assisted in fire extinguishment, a primary and secondary search, and overhaul.”

An adjacent apartment building was evacuated as a precaution until firefighters had the blaze under control.

No injuries were reported and first responders were able to contain the fire to the original structure. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In the wake of this fire, Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind residents to have a fire escape plan at your home and place of work and ensure to practice it regularly.
