Regional jobless rate slightly down in May

The unemployment rate in the region eased in May compared to April as well as the same time last spring.Statistics Canada figures released Friday state the jobless rate last month was 5.6 per cent in the combined Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region. That is down from 5.9 per cent in April and 5.7 per cent in May 2023.The province’s unemployment rate rose to 7.1 per cent, up 1.1. per cent as Calgary’s rate jumped two points to 8.0 per cent.Edmonton (7.1 per cent), Red Deer (7.6) Wood Buffalo (5.7) and Grande Prairie (5.5) were also up. Camrose-Drumheller (4.9 per cent, fell along side deep southern Alberta.Saskatchewan’s jobless rate also rose one point to sit at 6 per cent in May, slightly below the national rate at 6.3 per cent.Quebec (5.1) and Manitoba (5.2) posted the lowest rates among provinces.
