The jobless rate in Medicine Hat region was up slightly for April but is well down from earlier this year.

Figures presented Friday by Statistics Canada show the unemployment rate in the combined Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region sat at 5.9 per cent last month.

That’s two-tenths of a point higher than the same period in 2023, but 1.4 points less than in March.

The province’s unemployment rose to 6.9 per cent largely due to increases in Calgary (now at 7.9 per cent), Edmonton (6.8) and Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo (5.8).

The Camrose-Drumheller region continued to lead the province with a low of 4.4 per cent unemployment, while Grande Prairie was also down at 5.3 per cent.

Saskatchewan’s provincial rate was 5.9 per cent, while the Swift Current-Moose Jaw figure was up 1.7 points year over year to 5.7 per cent.

Manitoba rate was lowest at 5.1 per cent.
