Regional Happenings: Hat’s own Gordie Johnson and Big Sugar headline Whoop Up Days in Lethbridge

Hat-raised rocker Gordie Johnson will headline Lethbridge’s Whoop-up Days night show lineup with his band Big Sugar later this summer.

The acts for the summer fair and rodeo weekend were announced Wednesday by the Lethbridge Exhibition and the Agri-Food Hub.

Big Sugar will perform Friday, Aug. 23, as part of the band’s summer schedule that also includes an early August headline spot at the Pigeon Lake Music Festival.

Whoop Up Days shows will close on April 24 with a performance by Alberta country act Emerson Drive on a final tour appearance.

Up and coming country star Kyle McKearney will headline the April 22 show.

Water measures in Taber

Alternate day lawn care came into effect in Taber on Monday as that town enacts water conservation measures ahead of expected drought and water supply concerns this summer.

Level 1 restrictions will see houses with odd-numbered addresses allowed to use sprinklers on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday between 6 and 9 a.m. and 7-10 p.m.

The same times apply to even-numbered homes on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Friday is restricted for both.

Addressing convention typically puts odds and evens on opposite sides of a street.

The City of Medicine Hat has developed a similar system, though at current level water restrictions are voluntary.

Crop report due Friday

The first Alberta Crop report will be released Friday, according to Alberta Agriculture to start a usual schedule of weekly reports this growing season.

Conditions in the first edition will state a general outlook and current conditions as of May 7, meaning heavy rainfall in southern Alberta may not be captured.

Full or abbreviated reports will proceed on a generally weekly basis until the fall and will conclude Nov. 8.

Long weekend viewings of T-Rex

The T-Rex Discovery Centre in Eastend, Sask. will open for the season on May 18, the government of that province announced Wednesday.

The facility affiliated with the Royal Saskatchewan Museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Labour Day.
