Online applications for scholarship and bursary awards have opened for students at Medicine Hat College. Students are encouraged to apply for more than $350,000 that is available through donor funded awards. Several categories of awards are available for students coming out of high school entering college and for those continuing their post-secondary education. “It’s another resource that we try to help students access in addition to thousands of external awards that are separate from the ones our donors are funding,” says Michael Doughty, co-ordinator of student financial aid and awards. Doughty works with post-secondary students and says several are struggling to make enough money to afford living expenses and tuition fees. He told the News he works with students who rely on scholarships and bursaries along with savings and a job to afford their classes at the college. “Most students these days, the reality is, you’re going to have to have some savings,” says Doughty. “You’re going to have to apply for scholarships, you’re going to have to work just so that you can get through your program and get on to the career you’re looking for.” Online applications opened March 1 and will close June 1.
