Hat-native Ronnie Burkett has received lifetime achievement honours in the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards.

Burkett, 67, has gained renown as a puppeteer, playwright, designer and performer since starting the Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes in 1986.

The award notation states the “diversity and depth of his shows reveal his impressive range as a writer, performer and craftsperson.”

Burkett is one of five life-time honourees for 2024. Others are hip hop artist Wes “Maestro Fresh Wes” Wiliams, soprano Measha Brueggergosman-Lee, television, movie actress actress Andrea Martin, and songwriter Diane Juster.

Calgarian Jenny Belzberg earned an award for volunteerism in the performing arts, and stage artist Melanie Demers won the National Arts Centre Award.
