With new owners planning to rejuvenate the Monarch Theatre, the Friends of the Monarch Theatre Society is also hoping to bolster its numbers and fundraising for the historic movie house in downtown Medicine Hat.

The non-profit society will hold its annual general meeting on March 17 at the cinema on Second Street, but the deadline to hold voting membership at the meeting is today, Feb. 24.

Long-time society volunteer Judy Morris told the News that current membership sits at about 60 community members who have patiently waited for the theatre that closed in 2020 to open again.

“We welcome all to what will be a very interesting meeting now that the society is working with the Monarch 1911 Society, owners of the theatre,” she said.

That group, led by several Rotary Clubs in the city, acquired the theatre in late 2023 and has said it is concentrating on renovations before restarting operations and holding regular events.

Morris stressed that the Friends registered charity can issue tax receipts for donations toward capital improvements, which has been the focus of the friends work since it was created in the early 2010s.

The meeting will commence at 2 p.m. on arch 17 with doors at the theatre open to society members at one hour prior. Memberships are $10.

Morris can be reached at 403-529-9231 for more information.
