Friday will see law enforcement, EMS and other brave souls taking the plunge at Athletic Park in the name of supporting the Special Olympics.

As of writing, there are roughly 30 dedicated plungers, said Const. Dave Allen, though they expect a few last-minute entries. This year does hope to be larger than usual, due to the fact it will also feature the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

“The Law Enforcement Torch Run is a charity that exists only to raise money for the Special Olympics,” said Allen.

The run will leave from Towne Square at 4:15pm, ending just in time for those taking the plunge who have earned the ‘honour’ via securing donations from friends, family members, co-workers, local businesses, or their community.

“There’s going to be some athletes there as well for the torch run. Some of the athletes that are going up to Calgary for the Winter Games are going to be running through downtown Medicine Hat. So we’re excited for that,” said Allen. “I don’t think they’re plunging though, because they’re wiser than us.”

The funds raised go directly to the Special Olympics, said Allen, to help support weekly activities, be that bowling, basketball, or anything in between.

Registration will begin at 4:30 p.m, with the plunge itself at 5:30 p.m.
