Homebuilding activity in Cypress County plunged in 2023, joining a slowdown across the three municipalities in the Medicine Hat region.

Figures presented to the county’s municipal planning commission on Wednesday in Dunmore state that nine new dwellings received permits last year.

That’s compared to 28 permits in 2022 and 34 in 2021.

Over all merit types, only new commercial construction was higher, continuing a trend from 2022.

New decks, hot tubs and pools were up slightly, while general additions to existing buildings were steady.

Last month, Redcliff’s municipal planning commission heard that one new home permit was let in 2023, down from an average of four per year since 2019 and below a recent high of 17 in 2016.

In Medicine Hat, new building permits for single-family homes totalled 29, nine fewer than a slow 2022, while other residential permits also fell by half or more.
