Former teacher gets three years for sexual interference involving student

@MedicineHatNews A teacher who engaged in a sexual relationship with a student has been sentenced to three years in prison, a Court of Justice in Medicine Hat heard Friday. Rebecca McCubbin, 29, will also be required to submit a DNA sample and appear on the national sex offenders database. The former Eagle Butte High School teacher was charged in December 2021 with sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a minor. She had pleaded not guilty as trial dates were arranged, but pleaded guilty last October to the lesser charge of sexual interference. At that time court reportedly heard that on six occasions the student, whose name is protected by a publication ban, and McCubbin engaged in kissing and sexual touching over the course of several weeks in early 2021. She was fired by the Prairie Rose School Division when charges were laid in 2021, and after the guilty plea last fall, the board put out a public statement acknowledging the news was “unsettling” for many in the community. “Prairie Rose Public Schools remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all those impacted through transparency, prioritizing student safety and providing support as needed,” the statement read. 9-8
