A CPKC freight train derailed and spilled 34 shipping containers near the south city limits of Brooks on Monday afternoon.

RCMP in that city say no one was injured when 17 cars left the tracks at about 4:30 p.m. near the crossing of the tracks at Highway 873, which becomes Seventh Street E. at the municipal boundary.

RCMP were on scene redirecting traffic from the area. A stretch of Highway 1A, which parallels the tracks, from Range Road 142 to Seventh Street East is expected to be closed for some time.

Canadian Pacific police are in charge of the investigation.
