A CPKC freight train derailed and spilled 34 shipping containers near the south city limits of Brooks on Monday afternoon.

RCMP in that city say that no one was injured when 17 cars left the tracks at about 4:30 p.m. near the crossing of the tracks at Highway 873, which becomes Seventh Street East at the municipal boundary.

RCMP were on scene redirecting traffic from the area. The stretch of Highway 1A that parallels the tracks from Range Road 142 to Seventh Street East is expected to be closed for some time.

Canadian Pacific police are in charge of the investigation.
